Joseph E. Johnson

Born into a family of professional baseball players, Joe is a third generation pitcher and upon graduation from high school, signed with the Pittsburgh Pirates. During his 13-year professional career, he pitched in the organizations of the Pirates, Twins, Astros, Cardinals, Giants, Reds, White Sox, Yankees and Mets. AND, while pursuing baseball, he also attended Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, NY. Once his pro career ended, Joe continued to pitch semi-pro baseball in the New Jersey Met League, where he became the all-time winningest pitcher.

Between innings, Joe worked as a graphic designer at TIME magazine. He extended his playing career with a knuckleball, but his responsibilities at the magazine finally forced him to choose a career path and he went full-time, from pitching to publishing.

During his 30-year career at TIME magazine, Joe’s role included marketing, advertising, exhibits and international events. His favorite job there was coordinating logistics and security for the TIME Newstour program—events of five to fifteen days giving high-profile guests the opportunity to join TIME editors and travel the world to where news was happening.

In 2002 Joe took an early retirement package so he could pursue even more areas of interest. They include, in no particular order, writing, sculpting, model-building, dog-walking and continual freelance consulting.
